Well, we'll work in making sure he knows it. At least that's something everyone can do pretty easily; frequent reminders have to work in some way, right?
( she's only partially joking; after all, she told Jason she'd remind him daily if she had to that people cared about him and his well being.
at the apology, Clarke gently ruffles at his hair before dropping a quick kiss to the top of his head. casual affection comes so easily to her with certain people now that she doesn't even think twice. )
You don't need to be sorry for this. I love you and Jason; the last thing I want is you thinking you don't have anyone to talk to about it.
I don't know, Tadashi used to frequently remind me to go to bed early and I never listened. [It's a joke, something a little more lighthearted to alleviate the heaviness of the conversation. The kiss to his hair just renders a more muted grin, mostly because it's something Honey Lemon would do and it's just another reminder of how separated he is from everyone he knows. On the other hand, he's grateful for Clarke's unabashed affections and her ability to continue taking on things like this.]
I can usually handle it by myself. [There's a little shrug after that.] But this place is kind of...crazy. But we'll take care of it somehow and it'll work out. [He looks back toward the direction they were headed, grin becoming a little more genuine.] Come on. You can tell me more about what kind of classes we're sitting in on this morning on the way there.
[He starts to walk, waiting for Clarke to follow. Nothing's been fixed by any means, and there are still holes that need to be filled and things to be adjusted, but for right now this is enough. It has to be enough.]
[Hiro... that's so cute.] You would think so, but that's hardly the case. I chose opinionated people for advisors so that I would have every angle of a situation. That doesn't mean they all get along.
[His tone softens.] Let me know if there is a problem. I want to help you as much as I can.
[Hiro mentioning his dead older brother is pretty huge. Thrall's expression softens further. He wants to ruffle Hiro's hair, but that might be too much right now, so he lets him work on eating lunch.] Everyone gets frustrated sometimes. As long as you don't give up, you can be as frustrated as you want.
[His lip curves into a slight smile around his tusks.] There is plenty of time. [Unsaid, but felt: I believe in you. He really does, and he has, this whole time.]
[He's getting better about mentioning Tadashi. It gets a little easier every day to mention Tadashi even if he still is careful about it. He can talk about him, but he's focused on food because it's easier to split his attention.]
I just have to remember that. And at least I have people to remind me of that. [He looks up from under his bangs, giving Thrall a pointed look. He sees what you're saying there, dude.] I'm not going down without a fight though. That's not why I'm in this court. We just need to keep moving.
[And that is what they'll do. They're resilient, then Unseelie court. Hiro's always known that. They've had a lot of hard hits since Hiro and Thrall entered this world but they've made it out each time. They just can't give up.]
It is... not magic as I have seen it here. When I was asking for memories in creating my commission, I used it often. It was most commonly described by those who worked willingly with me as a sort of telepathy.
All Eldar have the ability, but it is also a skill to be honed. It is a way to communicate without spoken word. To read the thoughts and emotions and motives of another. To understand them in ways more subtle than most. It works well not only with other people, but with Ainur and beasts and even plants, wind, water, to a degree. If there is something that can be heard, being open through sanwe-latye can allow you to hear it.
To use it in a system would be to unveil plots of treachery while they are yet thoughts and not actions.
Kinda sounds like what Harry did when we were starting to rebuild our castle. He asked people for good memories that he could extract to fortify the walls. You did something similar, too?
[That is interesting. It's interesting that other people have similar types of magic and yet the longer Nerdanel speaks, the more Hiro can draw on the differences.] The sanwe-latye is a way of pinpointing things before their point of inception. Something that works even with the things that're intangible. [And knowing what he knows about the cult, that's also not a terrible idea.]
It sounds like a good idea if we can make it work. There's no way to detect when it's in action, is there?
Yes, I have worked with Harry before. I am sure he can tell you of it.
It... can be used for that, to a degree. I will admit, the system is not perfect. Whether or not I can be detected depends on the person. Other Eldar expect it of each other, and it comes as no surprise. With non-Eldar, I have always done my best to be clear of my intentions. And there are ways to shield against it, hide things in shadow and silence.
Perhaps it would be easier for me to demonstrate with you firsthand? I only use what I am able to see and hear to understand others better. I have no wish to harm anyone, and secrets are not mine to tell.
If I talk to him anytime soon, I'll have to ask him.
I think...our focus needs to be on keeping it hidden. We don't know what sort of detection magic and other strengths our enemies have and even if they aren't expecting it, we shouldn't give them a reason to even think about it.
A demonstration would be pretty sweet. I've got some time to spare over the next couple of days. When are you free?
( she doesn't quite move right away, as though her brain is operating on a delay; it's almost a whiplash from the seriousness of their conversation into the gears that Hiro has switched to, and it takes Clarke a moment to catch up to it. once she does, she begins walking with him, falling into step at his side.
it's definitely far from over, but- it's enough for now. )
No way, that's definitely a surprise that you get to enjoy as we go to them. I'm more interested in Nico. ( a beat. ) He wouldn't happen to be about your height, dark hair, pale, looks like he's been sad for a decade or five?
[She'll come to find that's how he's been trying to get by in the Drabwurld, little flits and lies of omission, little ways of brushing off the topics that matter until it's too late. More than anything he's still a little dazed and emotionally drained from that conversation, even if it wasn't everything in its entirety. Trying to change the subject is his way of recovering.
Granted, even if she's not taking the bait on that he doesn't exactly mind the subject she picks if the nervous laugh is anything to go by.]
Heh...so you've met him already. [Hiro wipe that smile off your face, you probably look like a giant dork.] He's got his reasons but I'm trying to make things a little better. ...I mean it's kinda hard since I haven't seen him or really heard from him in a month but that was part of the deal I made with Jason. [A short pause.] I'm sure he's throwing around the word "boyfriend" but I don't think he actually knows it's true. Nico and I kinda didn't agree on anything until after Jason grounded me. That was my bad.
I did, last summer. He helped me with something pretty personal; he's a good person.
( she's not about to get into what Nico actually helped her with, but at least Hiro can know that Clarke does think well of him. it might not make much of a difference, and it certainly wouldn't sit well with Jason, but that's a different kettle of fish.
Clarke hums in acknowledgement as they walk. )
It's hard to agree on anything when one half of the relationship is grounded. Even harder when you're not from the same place. ( very careful word choice there. )
[Considering Nico was called "the necromancer" for a while, he can probably guess. It's okay, Clarke, he knows he has a crush on someone with creepy powers. (Let's not get into the fact that that's part of the appeal.) He continues to follow, humming in agreement under his breath. Above all else, Nico is a good person. He knows that, even if Nico doesn't always agree. He picks up on the deliberate word-choice though, making a face in response.]
You mean when you're not on the same side? [It's okay, Clarke, he can take it.] Trust me, I know. Why else do you think Jason grounded me? [Even before they were dating Jason put the ban hammer on him seeing Nico.] ...can I tell you a secret? I don't even really know if it is dating when we haven't seen each other in a month and we can't talk like we used to because Jason took my compass and now the thing's shut down. I know long distance relationships exist or whatever but...[A shrug.] I like him and I don't feel like liking anybody else but maybe that won't always be enough. Besides if Jason ever gets confirmation he'd actually kill me so.
[...but there's another small grin anyway.] But he's a good person and it's worth trying. Until I can see him again it's just what we've gotta do. It's no different than missing everybody from home and still caring about them.
[That voice? Is the voice of someone who's got a lot on their mind.]
It's been a while. Sorry. Are you there? [A beat while she berates herself. Right this whole message is because she got the equivalent of an answering machine.] Let me know when you're there, I guess.
[It doesn't take long for him to answer, maybe only twenty minutes at the most and when he does call her back it's only slightly obvious that he just woke up from a mid-day nap. Pulling all-nighters is starting to catch up with him.]
[Not even five minutes go by before she gets a response. It was another late night and so sleep wasn't coming that easily anyway.]
Grell? [If he sounds surprised to hear from her, it's because he is. The longer he talks, the more awake he starts to sound.] I'm up. I mean I'm awake and I'm back at the castle. Why? Everything okay?
[Grell being alive is one less thing to worry about, at least.]
Leathann huh? I was there last summer. [You know, before the Void started showing up.] I kinda wish I could go back. How do you like it? How long have you been doing the courier thing?
[It sure doesn't answer his question, but he'll play along for a bit.]
A couple weeks. I was around Treun first, before I got here.
[Which... Riku. On the boat. Other people from her worlds. And all of the troubles involved in that. Then getting here, seeing all the reactions to her letters and deliveries.]
It's been okay. The city is nice [Better than Daonna] But... A lot's happened. I guess I don't know where to start.
[The only response Grell will hear at first is the sound of one teenage boy crawling around under his bed, an imp hissing at him and Hiro snarling back along with a brief scuffle for one of his shoes.]
Make that ten minutes from now. I'll meet you there. [He'll disconnect the locket and be on his way. Never mind the fact it's way too early for most people, he'll be there soon enough.]
