He'll wrestle a bear with his bare hands, no big deal. The spear is a great deal lighter than the axe, though it's pretty long. If nothing else, Hiro can use it like a quarterstaff.
Meanwhile, the creature is pissed. It opens his jaws impossibly wide and roars right in Thrall's face, a sound that scatters every bird in a half mile radius. Thrall doesn't even blink. Instead, he punches it. In the head.
