The question startles him though because he hadn't thought it'd come back up. He thought that since he'd (mostly) pulled himself together Joshua would just ignore it and let him talk about the Game and about the angel thing. That was his mistake.

He knows it's probably lingering effects from the harp combined with the nightmare itself and his own general sadness and mixed emotions from the problem at hand, but it still feels awful.
