UNSEELIE R&D

So you want to work with the Unseelie R&D Department! Welcome.

Team Members | General Projects Overview | General Mod/Team Questions

For all intents and purposes, the research portion will be the heaviest factor. As is the nature of the Drabwurld, it will take a large amount of time and energy and practice to proceed with any amount of progress

As per Sin's original doc:

"I just need to make something very clear as we go into this project: This world is build on very specific magic principles and rules. There is an already set limit on what kind of magitech can be discovered/developed and how that information is found by PCs. There will be a lot of failed projects that simply will not work because they would break the world’s laws .

That said, the mods are wonderful, will work with us even if staying very firm on some aspects of what can and cannot be accomplished, and we may even manage to surprise them with things that they didn’t think of that WILL work in the present magitech rules of this game. Because of this, I ask that we be respectful to the mods when they tell us we can’t do something. And even if the initial attempts to don’t work, keep looking for alternate ways to get the same end result. It may work! I also, personally, feel that it’s realistic for R&D projects to have a lot of failures before successes, which make the successes all the more ICly sweet."

This entry will serve not only as a way for me personally to keep track of what each character is doing but also will provide us with a landing page to know what the characters are doing and what ideas/suggestions we can come up with. For simplicity's sake, all current members of the R&D are listed below. Please comment to this entry with your character's name and feel free to use this comment to discuss projects your character is working on, a loose timeline of how they're achieving it, and also any future projects you'd like to work on (see Hiro's below as an example.) This is a comment that is meant to be continually edited! Additionally I will put up a comment below for project suggestions, etc.

In terms of contact, if you need to touch base with me at any time shoot a PM to zerotohiro, plurk me at @alternatively, or leave a comment.

Let's get started!

Major Players
Hiro Hamada | Loki of Asgard | Baron (Prince) Edgar of Etheria | Saber

Minor Players
Bellamy Blake | Clarke Griffin | Rin Tohsaka

General Projects Overview
"With an influx of new shardbearers with keen minds better suited for positions in support regarding the war than being involved in direct combat, Saber has decided that the Unseelie need to research melding magic and technology in ways that will work outside of the Station. To this end, she has charged Baron Edgar to house this project in his Spire as it is the farthest from the sight of the Seelie and in a relatively remote location. A classified project, Saber will expect discretion and secrecy from all involved. Revealing information about this project to the Seelie will be considered treason."

The following is a list of projects the R&D can develop over a large amount of time. Per the mechanics of the game it will take the entire timeskip and then some in order to accomplish the beginnings of several high-aiming goals the team has.

Possible Military Applications
Magic augmented siege weaponry
Armored Vehicles
War Beasts
LASERS
Golem Army
Mana Batteries

Possible Civilian Life Applications
Simple Communication Network for Non-Shardbearers
Indoor Plumbing/Appliances
Medical Advancements
Alchemy
Self-Sustainable Magical Energy Source

Some of these projects include:

New Comm Devices: (Easily do-able, but will have more limitations than monarch-given lockets. Hiro Hamada is working on these and Rin is the official creator for the Unseelie court right now.)
Gunpowder: (Will take 1 IC year to accrue enough to be used for anything more than one very small fireworks display, with sufficient logging of efforts)
Magical Batteries: (Need to determine how these will be used.)
Portals: (Fairy ring will remain the best way to fast-travel for individuals without teleporting powers. Portal-magic exists in came canon and is used by those with sufficient skill in portal-magic; PCs can learn this magic and be reasonably skilled within 6 months of study.)

General Mod/Team Questions
Q: Would the Aellyn sorcerers at the Tenth Spire be interested in being part of the R&D team and do they possess magic that is akin to a geas spell that would bind those involved in the project from speaking about it to Seelie?

A: A few of the sons from minor Aellyn houses might assist, but by and large the Aellyn attitude on this project will be very bleak

Q: I’m sure this is somewhere that I just haven’t looked yet because I’m at work and not-reading but how hindering is the blood granite in terms of magic ability? Edgar kind of mentioned it to Hiro when he was asking about stuff for building spire 10 but it was just general things.

A1: Not a mod, but as I’ve dealt with blood granite a lot in this game, it impedes all non-shard magic/abilities. So with enough blood granite about, for example, Lemina wouldn’t be able to throw a fireball. She just can’t make it work. That said, learning to use the shards and using them in conjunction with magic/abilities allows them to power through the blood granite, but that needs training to manage. Only a few characters can bypass blood granite with their shards.

A2: It's incredibly hindering. A few small slivers of blood granite on a person (or in them) is enough to simply break their magic use. A few bricks is enough to have an 'area effect' for the size of a standard living room, and a great quantity can nullify magic use for miles.

Q: I was thinking about this earlier today since I know a lot of people in the game right now since CS fell are going back and forth and are relying on the fairy rings. Some characters in the game can teleport and that’s awesome and there are some that have fast-travel boons and what-have-you, but I wanted to know if it would be feasible to maybe as a long-term project make our own series of portals? I know it’s a long-shot and I know if it became a Thing it’d be quite restrictive and complex and take time but maybe something like can only travel xyz amount in the Dorchadas? Like. Not a portal gun but something similar. Something very specific people (higher ups of the Unseelie army or something or people that pay a very, very high price) can carry around with them to lay out and step through to transport themselves to another place. I’m not sure if I’m making sense at all but it’s a thought I had and wanted to see what could be done. OR instead of portals maybe even man-made wings? Thinking along the lines of like Icarus.

Q2: I was actually having the exact same thought today about the expansion of fast travel in the Drabwurld. Even if we can start looking into something like man-made fairy rings for fast transport? But certainly something that wouldn’t rely on the monarch’s magic would be even better, since then they could still have some sort of fast travel during things like timeskip where the fairy rings are no longer operational. Going super nerdy into this but it could be something like the Kingdom Hearts version of the doors of darkness, but with far more stability/a static location. Where they can begin erecting doors (or something else!) around the map that will open from one location and lead into another.

A: It’s already established in canon lore that teleportation magic and door-magic like you’ve mentioned exist and are used by natives who have the skill. The catch is that individuals must know the magic to make such devices work in order to pass through them (and it’s established that 6 mos of training in a particular field of magic will award a PC novice skill)
