[Truthfully, the rest of August hadn't been much better in terms of how things went in the Drabwurld. He spent a lot of time following his own trails and paths of magic to protect the Unseelie court while also doing his research on what he and Loki had discovered, on top of taking on duties and extra lessons to become Clarke's second in command and learning how to grow used to his Shuck curse. It hadn't helped that he had other rabbit holes to fall down and split his time so much. It's the justification he gives himself for not being able to reach out to Xion either.
On the other hand, it's not as though her message really surprises him either. She's not the first to debunk from their court, and he's certainly not going to stop her. He hadn't stopped Lightning and he still liked her very much. The thing was simply that he had to follow the ones he cared about and place his faith in the idea that they're going to do something different. There are bigger things than what he even dares to say.
It's for that reason he calls back later in the day after a few other meetings and there's a bit of silence following.]
Good luck, Xion. Just take care of yourself out there. [What else can he say to that? "Thank you for telling me you're abandoning everything?" He can't fault her for it, no, but at the same time he's conflicted. It's best to leave it at that.] Let me know if you need anything else. I'll try my best.
[She isn't sure if the acceptance makes her feel relieved or... or if it hurts. It's easier to focus on the former. She's talked with Elizabeth already, so she's calmer than she was, but this still isn't an easy topic.]
Thanks. [beat] I'd still like to be friends, if we can. After everything's over, maybe.
[Because she has faith that they'll find a solution. Lightning's lead sounds like a pretty good one, and there may be others too. Who knew? She knows it might be dangerous though.]
Huh? [Whatever he'd been expecting, it wasn't that and though she can't see it he's giving the locket the most incredulous look right now.] What do you mean "if we can"? Doesn't that seem sort of...overdramatic?
[That's never been the issue here. Why would it be now?] Things are going to be over soon, I think. [Sooner than he knows, as he'll find out just how much time is left tomorrow from Jason Todd.] Leaving doesn't really mean you're leaving-leaving, you know? [There's a little shrug.]
You're not the first person to turn their backs on the court, and you're probably not gonna be the last. Not with the way things are sharping up, and fast. But that doesn't mean whatever you're thinking is wrong either. There's gotta be another way to do this, we just haven't locked all the pieces in yet.
[But again, a conversation tomorrow will change all of that. How different this would be if she'd called him a day later.]
Just don't give up hope and keep fighting for what you believe. [Even if it's different than what he believes in. It's the same thing he'd say to Lightning, too.]
You'd told me how the monarchs punish people who talk to people in the other courts.
[All in all she'd expected that to extend to Unseelie who refused to aid the Unseelie monarchs' goals. She knew the Organization took traitors pretty seriously, and didn't tolerate it in the slightest. Between Hiro's descriptions of their punishments and her own rather lower opinion of the monarchs compared to the Organization, she expected them to view it in any more positive a light.]
I thought it might be too dangerous.
But I won't give up. Our worlds still don't deserve to disappear. Nobody's do.
[Not even their enemies. But still, his words are a bit of a comfort and she smiles wistfully, though he can't see it.]
I did. [He's not going to deny that. He did tell her that, but he never actually explained the rest of that story and he knows it. Things became too hectic. There are a lot of rules to play by but there are a lot of workarounds as well. But it's better for her not to get muddled up in that.]
It's pretty dangerous though, you're right. I wouldn't really recommend it if you had a choice...but we'll figure everything out. None of the worlds deserve to disappear, but that's what the Seelie goal is. It's just a matter of finding a way around their goal and achieving ours. Keep searching, Xion.
[And he ends the call...
...for a moment. Before Xion's locket chimes with an incoming text message from an unidentified network that's been encrypted.]
But just because it's DANGEROUS doesn't mean some people aren't worth it.
[There you go, Xion. He's trusting her with that secret.]
