[Maybe it's a telling sign when he doesn't answer back immediately. Or maybe it's just Hiro being Hiro and sometimes texting requires pulling him away from whatever he's doing. It's hard to tell but he reads it immediately even if he doesn't respond right away. So there's a short amount of time before he does respond, maybe something in the neighborhood of ten minutes.]

Hey. [Smooth, Hiro.] Bubble weapons sound kinda cool, but how do the bubbles work if they're pretty much indestructible? And who's Keimi?

[This is a good conversation.]

[It's probably Hiro being Hiro. Either way, she almost forgot that she spammed him, having gotten distracted poking around something on her own--but upon seeing the response, she grins.]

Keimi's the one who can make the bubbles! Shes a mermaid and she said that so long as you dont try to pop them from two sides at once, they wont pop! Pretty cool right?

A mermaid? Like with a tail and everything? [That's a dumb question.] That's REALLY cool...we could make like bubble guns or shields or something. I'd have to study the physics of them and how they move and how Keimi makes them before we start drafting up prototypes of anything, but it sounds cool. Totally unexpected. Unless you're just texting me to tell me what you're up to.

But yeah, she had a tail and everything! The bubble was how she got around on land in the jungle, it floated and she sat on it, and she gave me one too!! I mean it didnt last when we ended up in the mountains but it was still pretty cool

He's met other people from earth before but that's pretty close.] You're across the bay from us, but you're probably from a world where the city's still called San Francisco. [He's traced back to some of Tadashi's posts and has figured out that most people don't know it as San Fransokyo.]

[Nothing's more cheerful than people on fire. Really. He shrugs in response.] A little. Think about this. Abandoned operating room but still scattered with a bunch of tools covered in dried blood and griffin fur. What would you make of that?

No, I meant like...I don't know, maybe you were already making them and just telling me about them? You make your own weapons, it's not that weird. Never mind, let's just start over. Hi. I didn't know we had mermaids here and I didn't know there were mermaids that could make transportation bubbles. How sick would that be if we could replicate something like that? Something stronger though so it survives other elements.

[ now it's dipper's turn to stop and blink. ] Wait - yeah, I mean, that's right, but - "still called San Francisco"? [ was hiro from the future where san francisco was renamed something else? or the future in an alternate world, at least. }

Sounds like it probably hadn't been too long since someone was there. That, or they left in a hurry. Maybe both. [ griffin fur is an especially odd clue in this mystery. why that? ] Were there any other clues left behind? Anything that might identify who was there? Any vehicle tracks outside? [ why keep a secret operating room on top of a mountain? it obviously wasn't reclusive enough to escape notice if it was abandoned in such a way. ]

[All of that is being bypassed because yes, he's overdoing it but what else can you do in Cerealia? So instead there's a slight pause again as he debates...maybe...she'd want to help?]

Absolutely. I wanna see what you come up with. ...what're you doing right now anyway? Are you busy?

Uh huh. They changed the name in 1906 after the earthquake that destroyed the whole city. [And before Dipper can ask, since he's also run into this problem with other people.] I live in San Fransokyo and it's 2032. Maybe that's why this place isn't that hard to figure out.

[Y'know. Save for the mysteries.] Snow seemed fresh so nothing like that, but before we even got to the shack we met a ton of the angry griffins that had tracking devices attached to their necks. A couple of us tried looking for clues in the building but we didn't find anything. I learned about some other stuff that might be related but it's pretty hard to say. All I know is that there's somebody out there doing some pretty heavy experimenting and I want to find out why.

[ san fransokyo, huh. go figure. and he was from the future from dipper's point in time, though not all that far into it. he can't help but wonder how different hiro's san fransokyo could be from his own san francisco, but he logs that away to ask about later. right now, his focus is too drawn in by hiro's story about the griffins. ]

Was there anything strange about them? I mean - I guess that could be hard to tell unless you've met other griffins. [ maybe hiro had. DIPPER DOESN'T KNOW. ] Whoever was experimenting in that operating room might've been trying to enhance them for one reason or another. Or maybe they were guinea pigs for something bigger. [ though who would pick griffins as guinea pigs? but this DOES fall in with one of dipper's cerealia theories... ] In any case, their test subjects could've gotten out of hand, and that could be why they abandoned it, too.

[ so many variables. man, he wishes he could have been there. that seems so much more interesting than the natives living reclusively in the volcano. ]

[Good. It actually does give her a bit of a warm fuzzy feeling when he says he wants to see what she ends up working on; she smiles at that, before responding.]

Not really! Im not doing much. I mean, it's not like work is open again yet or anything so i was kind of just moseying around, you know how it is!

[Because everything is terrible and he could use the distraction momentarily. Things with Tadashi are weird, but that's not something he can tell Ruby, so...]

I think I promised to show you something cool whenever we got back to the colony. And I want to ask you about some other stuff, too. If you're up for it, I mean.

It's cool, it's not like I'm laughing at you on my end of the line or anything. [It's meant to be a sarcastic quip but those are hard via text. Even if he's not laughing though he does find himself grinning at the thought.]

Even if the shop's not open we can probably use Tadashi's workshop for a little while, right? You guys have to have keys to get into the place.

I've never met a griffin before so unless you count "ruthlessly attacking and having injection sites in their skin" as something strange, then no. [That alone is strange enough.]

...somebody I met gave me some interesting information that might build up a solid theory to what happened to them though. It kinda ties into the idea of them being guinea pigs, too. I asked him to send it to my CereVice but I haven't had a chance to check it out and decrypt the data yet. [A pause.] That's the only thing about Cerealia. There's a ton of information out there and we don't really know who knows what.

[ definitely strange, and worth further investigation. what else could be lying outside the walls of the colony? they had probably only just scratched the surface of the real mystery here.

looking thoughtful, dipper nods. ] And we don't exactly have a safe way to share it. You know, away from prying eyes. And ears. [ just like he had discussed with yu. dipper would never really feel comfortable sharing information unless he could encrypt it. that was easy enough to do for himself, but how to communicate it to others without using sight or sound? ]

There's...probably a lot of clues out there, but we don't know who has them. [ and in a case like this, what they could stand to gain by sharing information just may outweigh the risk of trust he'd have to take. ]

[The door accepts her credentials, unlocking with a cheerful jingle.]

[He looks up from his feet, watching her approach and grinning in response before using a foot to launch himself off of the door and step away. Hiking his backpack up higher on his shoulder he glances up at the door as though wondering where the sound came from and following her inside.]

I want to start looking for some materials so I can build a portable battery for Baymax. Plus I want to show you some other stuff. [He gestures to the backpack with his head. It's nice that Ruby's not asking hard questions. He's well aware he probably looks like he just woke up but he also trusts Ruby not to call him on it. It's…a little weird still, knowing how much she knows and knowing he told her on purpose. He recalls that he made a promise to Yang, too, but…now's not a good time. Maybe in the next never. He seems to know where he's going as he takes the lead and heads for Tadashi's workshop, still talking over his shoulder.]

Soooo I was thinking...I want to start building weapons, too. I had one of Tadashi's gloves in the jungle but I don't have anything of my own. Probably should fix that if we ever go back out there, huh?
