So...what's going on? [May as well jump right in even as he flops down on the couch, waiting for Roxas to do the same.]

[roxas will follow suit, though he's definitely not as relaxed as hiro is. he's not even really sure how to respond to the question, so he's silent for a bit.

but when he asks, it'll be pretty blunt. his tone betrays the question though, since he sounds a bit tentative; the words themselves can't really be mistaken though.]

How did you know... when you liked Ruby? Like... [a crush.]

Like enough that I wanted to date her? [Just gonna fill in the blanks here. It's a good question though and it's enough for him to pause in thought.] ...it's kinda weird, I guess. I mean I met Ruby the same day I met you and I met Mary. You three are the oldest friends I have here. [And that's important to him. It's actually very important and sort of astonishing that they've all been friends for almost six months in this dumb place. It's also the only reason he's bothering to be truthful with his response.]

For a long time I don't think I realized it. Ruby and I have always been good friends ever since I met her. I mean you've seen her. There's something about her that makes it really easy to relax and just talk to. Ruby and I have a lot of stuff in common so it was just...really cool to have a friend like that. You remember that flood? Natalia teamed us up to help people out and after that we sort of just fell into a pattern of helping each other out. We're both the leaders of our teams back home. And even though I know she can hold her own, I still worry about her and want to make sure she comes back from missions safe...I don't really know what I'd do if something did happen to her.

That was probably my first tip-off. I couldn't really imagine my life without her and she's the one person who makes everything better just by existing and she gets it without me having to explain a lot of things and she lets me just...be myself. No expectations, nothing. [Mochi by then has jumped up on the couch, claws digging into Hiro's thigh and causing him to wince as he tries to push him off.] It's hard not to be happy when she's around and it's even harder to watch her be sad about anything. [And then there's an almost shy grin.] ...I want to make the world a better place for her. She's one of my biggest motivations. So...I guess that's how I knew. She's like my best friend, but it's different than having a best friend. My best friends don't make me trip over my own words or think about them all the time or distract me so much that I light my kitchen on fire.

[roxas is quiet.

he's really quiet, but it's obvious that he's hanging on to every last word of hiro's. in his head, he's doing the mental checks against his own situation with mary.

—naturally, he's hitting each one well. knowing her since day one, check. worrying about her safety, check. not wanting to live his life without her in his, check. lets him be himself without question, check. happy when she's around, check. sad when she's sad, check. like a best friend, check.

...he'll come back to that kitchen on fire thing in a second, but first? well, first comes the part where he mutters out loud to himself.]

[well, he... kind of expected hiro to ask or figure it out anyway, in all honesty. hiro's too smart for this.]

Mary said... that's what having a crush was like. [yeah, that's definitely not all of the explanation. it's true, but that's definitely not all of it. spitting that part out isn't easy, though.]

I didn't really know, since before... I thought I couldn't know what that felt like.

But since you have a heart now, you can. [Yeah, he's starting to see where this is going.] Does it all make a lot more sense now?

[He's trying not to outright ask if he has a crush on someone, but it's close enough.]

[He tilts his head back to stare at the ceiling in though. They're friends. This shouldn't be weird to talk about at all.]

[it's a feeling he's had for a while, he just never knew what it meant or what to do with it. now that he knows... well, he still doesn't know what he's supposed to do.]

I mean not always but I was pretty freaked out when I realized I liked Ruby, so...[Take that for whatever, Roxas.]

I don't feel... scared. More like... it just makes sense now. I didn't know before what it meant, what I was feeling. But...

Now I just get it. [he doesn't know what he's supposed to do with it, but whatever. baby steps!]

I don't think most people feel scared about it, but...I guess I was just really scared that she wouldn't like me back and I'd lose her. That's pretty much the last thing I ever want from Ruby. [He smiles faintly.]

I think you're on the right track at least. But what're you gonna do about it now that you know what it is?

Yes! [Whoa, wait.] I mean yes and no...? It's definitely something you should probably tell her but I mean...when you're ready, you know? Ruby and I didn't tell each other for a month or something, it was pretty dumb. But you shouldn't feel like you have to immediately do it, you know?

It's not that I'm ready or not ready... I didn't really think about it like that. I just, I don't like keeping secrets from my friends. Not ever.

Axel's... one of my best friends. [though maybe even that is debatable at this point. he's still not sure.] Another Nobody, like me.

But I guess there's no way to know for sure.

...maybe it doesn't really matter until we figure out what's going on here. Who knows? We might find a real answer. [But they're getting a little off-topic.] Anyway focus on the thing with Mary, dude. That's way easier to solve than you think it is.

I'm not that worried... I don't want things to go wrong, but I'm not going to keep it to myself for a long time, either. I think I did that enough with her.
