[Look if he didn't believe that Trowa could handle it he wouldn't have delivered the truth bomb that way.]
I'd say that mercenaries probably aren't the best source when it comes to this kind of stuff but that was probably your only resource. Ignore most of what they said. Anyway it's not just about affection either. Let's start from the top. Do you even want to do something about it now that you know what you're dealing with?
[ Ok fine.... Trowa is used to shocking news. This is just a little outside his normal day. ]
I'd agree with that notion. They're a bunch of gossips; who knows how much was truth.
Maybe. I'm not sure. I don't think it'll change his opinion of me, so that's at least reassuring. I can't tell if saying anything will make the situation any easier. It's all pretty risky, isn't it?
Of course it's risky, but some of the best things are.
[He's not even going to comment on the fact it's a boy, though it makes him wonder something...] Now that you've got the framework, tell me something. Is there any kind of indication maybe he might feel the same? What do you even like about this dude anyway?
It's like the feeling of weightlessness. I feel like there's possibility instead of a dead end.
[ His whole life has been scraping by to survive. No one bothered as much to get inside his personal headspace. Well, besides Quatre and Cathy. But Catherine was more like a sister, if she was to fit into a mold. With the other pilot, there's already a foundational understanding. And lately, a strange tension that leaves him reeling and at a loss for words.
I don't know if I get the whole "weightlessness" thing, but I guess I can see it. If there's a possibility, you're going to take it?
[All this is telling him is that relationships and romantic feelings all vary between people. While that was obvious it really makes him think more closely on it now.]
Maybe and maybe. It's not like I had a crush on someone from my future or from home or anything but I dealt with the whole "kinda wanna run away and never look back while simultaneously not knowing how to breathe and wanting to stick as close as possible" thing for like a month.
I lit the stove on fire and she lit my brother's pillow on fire because she was being distracting with my cat...I didn't have much of a choice after that.
Yeah well at least I did something about it. [Trowa.]
...I met Ruby on my first day here. We've been pretty good friends since then. I trust her more than anyone in the colony, sometimes even more than my brother. It sort of made sense that I started to like her. Dunno when Ruby decided to start liking me but it's been a while, apparently. And maybe I should have figured it out a little while ago from little signs but I think we were both waiting for the other to say something.
And then I lied and told her I could make pancakes, lit my kitchen on fire and then everything else sorta spilled out. If that's why we deserve each other then I'll take it.
If you want to get technical about it, sure. More like ships colliding into an ice berg and all passengers evacuating on life boats to save things before they got too out of control.
...but she does. She's great. She's smart and she's funny and she's kinda quirky and awkward but I like that because I don't have to try to be cool or normal around her even though sometimes I want to and she knows how to make her own weapons and she fights with this giant scythe and she's saved me a couple of times but I'm saving her, too, we're hero partners and we're going to protect the whole city. And she gets it. She gets ME. I'm not as afraid of everything as I could be because I know Ruby's still around and she chose me.
So yeah. I guess that's happiness. That's what returned affection looks like.
Oh so you DO know what I'm talking about. They made a bunch of movies about it and everything.
[This isn't cute, this is embarrassing, but he also can't seem to shut up.] Nothing else is better than robotics, but Ruby's sort of a close second? Just under Tadashi. She even wants to learn how to build and disassemble them herself.
[This relationship wouldn't work if Ruby wasn't as into this kind of stuff as he is.] It's the kind of effect she has. Serious question, would you wind up babbling like this to somebody about this other guy?
Vaguely. I read about it in a book once. They made movies about it?
Sort of a close second? She sounds like she already is. Just don't get too carried away in explanations, it won't help her if you vibrate out of the room.
Some people bring out the best in us. [ Hiro this is definitely cute. ]
About Quatre? I don't know, maybe? I'm not very talkative as is.
Couple of them. There's one from like thirty years ago that won a ton of awards and stuff too.
Okay so maybe she is a close second, shut up. I don't know how to deal with this most of the time. It's not like people and I really got along back home anyway. I think she kinda likes my explanations about stuff anyway.
[That, or he doesn't care. But probably the former.] Ruby definitely makes me try to be a better person. We'll see how that works out.
I mean they're not BAD? Some of them are just really long and the most well-known one is actually like this drama-romance movie. Good's a pretty subjective term.
I'm not sure if I should find that offensive or not, but you're probably right.
[Bro.] Yeah, oh. I wasn't gonna judge because whatever, you can't really pick who you end up liking but…come on, Trowa. Heero told me all about how he self-detonated and jumped out a 50 story window on two different occasions. I didn't know there was another pilot here.

Hmm. Maybe. He said I was important to him, but I don't know that's something to read into.
I'm not sure. Any answer I can come up sounds pretty dumb. Mostly it's just a feeling.

What poor soul has accepted your affection?

[A few seconds later:] Her name's Ruby. Just...keep it to yourself, it hasn't even been 24 hours yet.

[ But oh. A name. He'll poke around in his own way. ]
I can keep a secret.
How did you decide to say something?

I lit the stove on fire and she lit my brother's pillow on fire because she was being distracting with my cat...I didn't have much of a choice after that.

Well the good news is I think you've demonstrated that you two deserve each other.

Like ships passing in the night, yeah?
As strange as it is to say, I'm glad you lot your stove on fire. Clearly she makes you happy, so.

[ Too far flung in the future to appreciate Jack and Rose's romance on the doomed ship. Alas. ]
You know, the only other time I've seen you this excited is when you're talking about robots or programming.
[ Which is to say: this is cute. He's happy for you bro. ]

--wait who's Quatre???

Honestly if she's known you for longer than a day, she's probably used to it by now.
[ And good luck with all of that working out. It's sounding like all of this is more and more complicated. ]
...The person I've been sort of talking about this entire time? Who else did you think—oh.
