[This time, his message is short, and he looks irritated.]
Come on, Hiro. What, let that name get to you? I've been looking up things. I bet you'd care. What happened to Naggy the Curious Dog? [A beat.] Guess I shouldn't have expected much from a kid like you.
Did you know that you're well on your way to becoming a cautionary tale? I might start telling stories about you. Stories about the boy who cried cross bow, lost on a battlefield without anything but wide eyes and a bunch of blood gushing from someone's neck. Oh, but that wasn't you, was it? Who got you into the business, Hiro?
[Joshua has, by this point, become a hard person to track, even by normal Joshua standards. Yet, he does take the time to send Hiro a gift. He'll get the following:
(1) Glass cat (1) Tailored set of clothes, both fashionable and able to keep him warm during the winter (1) Pristine sketchpad with (5) charcoal pencils; on the inside of the cover, in neat handwriting, is the following phrase: "To the one with big ideas, catalog the images that will make San Fransokyo proud to have you as its citizen."
There's also a note:]
Out of the darkness of the previous year, make the next one shine brighter.
[Nico's got gifts for Hiro, too! He does it by way of carrier hell hound, aka Clifford. Sorry about the mess and drool and stuff, dude.
Here's what Hiro gets:
(1) Pocket sized screech owl figurine (1) Box of homemade shortbread, gingerbread, and sugar cookies (1) Perfectly balanced dagger with an ivy pattern carved intricately onto the hilt
There's also a carefully written note. The handwriting's a little messy, but it's readable.]
The screech owl is my father's animal. I thought it might give you protection. As for the dagger, it's easier to hide on your person, so you'll have an advantage if you're clever enough. Use how people underestimate you to gain an upper hand.
PS: sorry if the food doesn't taste very good. I made them myself.
[He's been practicing really hard to get them right.]
[Nico may not have been expecting a response but he's getting one a few hours later.]
1.) Your dog drooled on me. A lot. Equal parts gross and awesome. I've never seen a hellhound (??) 2.) Did I tell you I was learning to fight with a dagger or did you just guess? This is awesome! (Also come on. Totally clever enough.) 3.) Oh! I know this legend! The owls are supposed to be protectors in war, right? An owl flying over the Greek army meant sure victory. I've got the perfect place for it. It's…kinda cute. Fun, normal-person fact: did you know they're some of the rare birds that mate for life? But they're also some of the birds that don't build nests for their babies so it's kinda weird what they prioritize and they're also kind of really vicious when food's involved…wow. Sorry. Nerd rambling. ANYWAY… 4.) They taste fine, dude. Promise. You have good taste. I didn't even know you baked. Thanks for everything.
[There's a lull in messages. He's thinking. He's debating. There's a lot going on in his head but he's not going to bother bringing it to light just yet.]
Let's hang out soon when you're not busy. I can probably sneak out after the next time Clarke drops in to check on me.
[And he's, in turn, not expecting an answer back. It's just out there, just in case.]
[She hasn't forgotten their conversation at Treun, so come Yule morning, Hiro will find a package sitting next to him wherever he is, delivered by raven. It's neatly wrapped, not giving away much in the way of shape. Upon unwrapping it, he'll find a leather bound journal, words elegantly written into the leather, and a delicate-looking black quill slipped into the cord wrapping around the journal along with a note, a smaller bottle of ink is wrapped up in a separate parcel.
Everyone's legend has to start somewhere. Sometimes we need to take it into our own hands.
[ For Yule, Hiro will receive a red-and-blue wool scarf and an extra obsidian necklace/communicator, with a note that says "just in case" and a smiley face. ]
[ there's some neatly wrapped cheese pastries from one of Redgate's bakeries. there are also two small jars with runes written in Loki's neat writing across the cap. there's a note enclosed:
You can activate them by opening the cap. They'll hold all forms of spirits and terrible nasties, but not for anymore than 14 days. You'll have to figure out what to do with them after the time limit. :) Great for holding candy when you're done. Hugs! —L
on another piece of parchment are instructions for Stage 2 of Illusion magic, which includes illusion-ing up his clothing. if Hiro digs to the very bottom of the box, there's a tiny little triangle of fabric. it's a piece of Loki's jacket. no note, no nothing. but Loki figures he knows what to do with it. ]
I'm writing to see how you're doing and how your training has been going. If your control has improved. Have you been practicing the breathing and meditation I showed you? I know it's been a few months since we spoke, but that means you've had time to try it and see if it works. I know you may have found another way that works better for you than the way that I know.
I've been practicing, too. I've learned to tell what the magic I have feels like. How different it is from the power of the elements that I know. And I've been teaching myself how to use it with the power of the elements that I already have. To give myself the kind of strength I used to have with them. I'm still not where I was before I came to this world, but I'm doing much better.
If you are still struggling, I could come see you at the Station for a few days in September or October to show you what I've learned. I think it will help you. If you've already found another way, then I hope you are improving by the day.
Training's been...kinda going okay. I think I'm getting better though! Nothing's caught on fire recently so that's always good, right? I'm working on the meditation but sometimes it's too quiet to actually meditate. Does that make sense? It's like there's nothing to block out so my thoughts wander anyway. But I'm working on it. I've been working on a couple of things actually.
Oh yeah? I'd like to see your progress because it sounds like you're making a ton of it. That's awesome, dude! I'm really glad to hear that.
Would you believe me if I told you I'm not at the Station? Ever since the fairy rings busted it's been a lot harder to get out there, but I think I could probably hitch a ride with some of my guys to get there in September. I wouldn't mind seeing what else could help. I've gotta restock some stuff anyway.
If October works better though, let me know. I'll get somebody to take me out there.
[ Hiro will get a fountain pen. If he examines it, he'll find that pressing it in a certain way will extend a switchblade. ...Because of course it does. There's also another interesting rock.
Included is a very brief note in surprisingly tidy handwriting.
'Happy Yule.'
Apparently Shijima didn't feel the need to sign her name... ]
[Surprise surprise! Wherever Hiro is during the later week of April, a raven will find him carrying a parcel. Once given a treat (and nipping playfully at his fingers), Moryn will leave him to open the parcel, finding inside it another leather bound book, only this one is different to the one he got for Yule. Inside it, written carefully in Drabbish, are notes on the various creatures throughout the Drabwurld. The myths and legends left by the people of Britain, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are written underneath headers, little drawings in corners depicting what they should look like. On the inside of the cover is a note on the first page, signed only with the initial of her first name.
For those brave enough to seek answers.
- M.]
audio; hiro's network; early may sometime i am flexible if you are!
[Ahaha…a nightmare is just about accurate. For a brief moment, he considers not even answering the call. It's nothing personal, but…the day of the audience and the hours after it have pretty much shattered him. Eventually though he answers, tone as neutral as possible versus his usual enthusiasm.]
[The last few days have been miserable. But Jason at least is slightly more stabilized when he calls Hiro again. Did he say he didn't care about where he was? Well, it turns out that's just another lie. Jason is really good at those.]
Where are you now? Mair? The White Citadel? Hell, did you get eloped yet?
[But he's Jason. He might be better now, but he's still frustrated with this. From what he can see, Hiro did better than last May. One month to less than a day. Less than half of a day, if he's timing it right.
[He debates not answering at first, but when he does it's easy to tell that he's being incredibly cautious. Miserable's a good word for it, but he's busy ignoring his grievances as usual. Burying himself in research and learning things.]
No…you told me to go back to Caer Scima. So I did. You can ask Clarke if you want, she was just here the other day.
In response to your inquiry on textiles: could you kindly provide more information about what you seek? I live outside of the northern territory where there is far better trade, and it is likely I can find what you seek.
Please respond via writing. The lockets are not a safe venue.
What I need is something to match a swatch of fabric I already have. The swatch was a gift from a friend and it's from his jacket that allows himself to become invisible. I would like to find a fabric with similar properties that I can utilize to fashion myself something close, especially given how things have become pretty intense lately.
...in other words, I want to find a way to sneak around without getting killed. Think you know of something close?
[At least Archer was timely. And using a huge-ass Raven. Mostly huge because it was carrying this, blueprints. Which anyone movie savvy enough would be able to recognize that design. Just not as....all worn down and screwed up as it was in the movies. And the front piece was a bust of Archer instead of an angel.
Don't question why he was able to draw that up, he has a really good memory when it comes to things HE'S doing and is contemporary media.]
Make it better, faster, and more......dangerous. And possibly sexy. This is going to be the ship to rule the seas right here. I call it The Sterling Bullet.
Will pay in cash or alcohol. Or women, if that's your choice.
[He's not sure what's worse, the fact that he recognizes exactly what the blueprints resemble or the fact that he fought with Archer's raven until he'd send a message back.]
You were actually serious.
Okay! Okay, that…shouldn't be too hard. So a pirate war ship, coming right up. I'll…make it as dangerous and possibly sexy as possible. [Too bad sarcasm doesn't translate well over text.]
Pretty sick designs though, dude. Will take cash. Definitely cash. Deadline? You have a deadline don't you? I need that so I can start calling in my crew.
( following this exchange, she already feels about ten times lighter about things. because yeah, nothing is better or fixed, and nothing has changed, but-
there's the promise of something normal, and that feels better than anything. )
[Unlike Clarke's bit of chipperness, when Hiro responds he sounds...tired, mostly. But he'll muster up a little bit of enthusiasm because it's Clarke.]
Um. Probably practicing writing out runes, maybe looking for something new to read in the library...you know, real exciting stuff. Why?
[Hey, as long as Thrall doesn't acknowledge Hiro's own dark circles he won't acknowledge Thrall's. But there's a slight grin, not entirely surprised by the lack of greeting and jumping right into it. Things have changed.]
Depends on where you are and if you're available today or tomorrow. I could use a break. [Because apparently beating the crap out of stuff is considered a break...] Sorry, I--things got kinda out of hand the last couple of weeks. I meant to call you earlier.
